about

This EP was the first composition I wrote for violin, sitar, and tabla, around 2013. It is inspired by Persian hijaz as well as the Hindustani raga, Basant Mukhari. It is performed in teental, a 16 beat rhythm for tabla. However, the usage of teental in this composition is unorthodox, straying away from the traditional Indian style. Over the years of performing parts of this composition, it has evolved and changed in small ways, resulting in the recording here.

The first track, "Gesture," is completely improvised, the only decisions that were made were who goes first, and approximately how long the track was going to be. We did 3 takes, and the second take ended up being the keeper. Every time I listen to it, I wish it was longer. Hopefully, you'll enjoy it as much as I do.

"Dancing In Ladakh Part 1" was the most challenging track on here for me to write. A medium tempo piece, it was written and rewritten many times, scrutinizing the overall structure as well as the finer details.

On the other hand, "Dancing In Ladakh Part 2" was written in a day, in a single sitting. It is the most dynamic of the tracks, with fabulous playing by both Joanna and Josh throughout. The ending rhythmic part I credit to my friend, Aharon Wheels Bolsta, who suggested it during our first rehearsal of the piece.

I do hope you enjoy!
